The team ‘sparked’ around the ambitious idea of developing innovative farm designs that could improve their biodiversity and productivity. Interdisciplinarity is at the core of this ‘Off-the-Grid’ idea: agroecology defines the challenge, materials engineering provides the tools to tackle it, while mathematics acts as the language that connects them. Specifically, our ambition is to repurpose engineering materials design by encoding it with a rigorous mathematical language, to rethink our food-production infrastructures and the landscape in which they are embedded.
