The team ‘sparked’ around the ambitious idea of developing innovative farm designs, that could improve their biodiversity and productivity. Interdisciplinarity is at the core of this ‘Off-the-Grid’ idea: agro-ecology defines the challenge, materials engineering provides the tools to tackle it, while mathematics acts as the language that connects them. In the specific, our ambition is to re-purpose engineering materials design by encoding it with a rigorous mathematical language, to re-think our food-production infrastructures and the landscape in which they are embedded.
